About the scientist:

Barbara McClintock (1902-1992) was a pioneering American geneticist who is best known for her work with maize and her discovery of transposable elements, or "jumping genes," in the 1940s and 1950s. Her research challenged the prevailing notion of genes as static entities and instead showed that they could move within and between chromosomes. Despite facing skepticism and criticism from the scientific community at the time, her findings later revolutionized the field of genetics and earned her numerous honors, including the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1983. McClintock's legacy as a groundbreaking scientist and independent thinker continues to inspire researchers in genetics and beyond.
