About the scientist:

Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin (1900-1979) was a British-American astronomer and astrophysicist who made significant contributions to the understanding of the chemical composition of stars. In her doctoral thesis, Payne demonstrated that stars were primarily composed of hydrogen and helium, a groundbreaking discovery at the time. She was the first woman to receive a PhD in astronomy from Radcliffe College, and later became the first woman to be appointed as a professor of astronomy at Harvard University. Her work laid the foundation for our understanding of the universe's composition and helped pave the way for future astronomical research.
