About the scientist:

Jonas Salk (1914-1995) was an American medical researcher and virologist who is best known for developing the first successful polio vaccine. Prior to his discovery, polio was a devastating disease that affected millions of people worldwide. His vaccine proved to be a game-changer, drastically reducing the number of polio cases and leading to the near-eradication of the disease. Salk was also a pioneer in the development of other vaccines, including those for influenza and AIDS. He was recognized as one of the most significant medical scientists of the 20th century, and his work has had a profound impact on public health worldwide.
