About the scientist:

Mae Jemison (1956 - present) is an American astronaut, physician, and engineer who has made significant contributions to the scientific community. In 1992, Jemison became the first African-American woman to travel to space as a crew member aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. Prior to her career as an astronaut, Jemison studied chemical engineering and African-American studies at Stanford University, and earned a medical degree from Cornell University. She went on to serve in the Peace Corps as a medical officer, where she also taught science in Sierra Leone and Liberia. Jemison is a strong advocate for increasing the participation of women and minorities in STEM fields, and founded the Jemison Group, an educational consulting company that aims to improve science literacy through technology and innovative teaching methods.
